A Word Study on Faith

What is Faith?

Many people today describe “faith” as something abstract — a vague belief, an inner feeling, or a mental assent. This is a Greek or Western way of thinking, not a Hebrew one. In Hebrew, emunah (commonly translated “faith”) is not abstract at all. It means firmness, steadiness, reliability — something you can lean on like a solid foundation. It is concrete and lived out in action, expressed through loyalty and obedience to YHWH. To the Hebrew mind, faith is not a shapeless idea but a way of living in covenantal faithfulness.

  • Faith is not some intangible idea, but in Hebrew it is concrete loyalty and steadiness.

  • Faith is not a feeling, but Torah shows it as a Way of Living. a Standard of Conduct.

  • Abstract faith is Greek; firm, living out 'emunah is Hebrew.”

  • In other words, true "faith" is how one lives, steadfast, fidelity, firm in Torah to YHWH.

Word Study: Faith (אֱמוּנָה — Emunah)

Hebrew Word:  אֱמוּנָה (Emunah)

  • Root: אמן (A-M-N).  The Same root as: Amen (אָמֵן) — to affirm, to confirm, to support

Essence of the Word:

Emunah doesn’t mean “belief without evidence” or emotional trust in an invisible idea.  It means steadfastness, firmness, faithfulness, loyalty, and reliability.  To have 'emunah is not just to mentally agree with something.  It’s to walk in fidelity, remain true, live consistently, and uphold your word.  This is faithfulness in action, not just belief in thought.

Hebrew Examples in Scripture:

But Moses' hands were heavy… and Aaron and Hur

supported his hands… and his hands were steady until

the going down of the sun.  (Ex. 17:12)

(Hebrew: וַיְהִי יָדָיו אֱמוּנָה — his hands were faith/faithful/steady)

'Emunah here = steadiness, endurance, support.

The righteous shall live by his faith ('emunah).  (Hab. 2:4)

The righteous lives by faithfulness, being faithful/steady/sturdy — not belief in a creed, but a walk of commitment.

...a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.  (Deut. 32:4)

YHWH Himself is described as faithful, sturdy, firm, unchanging.
It’s a quality of character—not a feeling or hope.

Pictographic Breakdown of אֱמוּנָה (Emunah):

Let’s explore the ancient pictographs:

  • א (Aleph) — Ox head → Strength, Leadership

  • מ (Mem) — Water → Chaos, Flow, Continuity

  • ו (Vav) — Hook → Connection, Securing

  • נ (Nun) — Seed → Life, Offspring, Continuance

  • ה (Hey) — Man with arms raised → Revelation, Surrender, Look!

Meaning encoded:

The strong flow of secure life revealed.  Or: A life securely anchored and revealed through steadfast action.  Faith is not invisible—it reveals itself through loyal, steadfast conduct.

What Faith Is Not:

  • Not blind belief

  • Not a magical feeling

  • Not an emotional leap

  • Not passive “trust” without evidence

What Faith Is:

  • Firmness

  • Fidelity

  • Loyalty to YHWH’s Covenant

  • Active obedience

  • A walk of steadfastness

  • A revealed lifestyle, not a hidden emotion

Final Reflection:

When the Hebrew prophets speak of faith, they’re not asking,

“Do you believe hard enough?”

They’re asking,
“Are you walking in steadfast Covenant with the One you claim to serve?”

Emunah is the daily decision to stand firm, to cling to YHWH,

and to keep walking in His Way—no matter what.
